Homed near Newbury, within the walls of a restored 19th-century farmhouse a welcoming, intimate bar area surprises by opening into an airy, Scandic-style extension. The vaulted larch ceiling sets the stage for a memorable dining experience, where beautiful decor, ambient lighting, and carefully curated acoustics create a harmonious atmosphere. A special note is deserved for managing to create this stunning cavernous stage, whilst maintaining good acoustics. I’m not sure if it’s the lush indoor planting, or the birch ceiling that helps absorb the sound, but the space, like every aspect of The Woodspeen has been well thought out and beautifully delivered.

Heading the culinary brigade is the dynamic duo of Sam and Peter. Sam, the head chef, orchestrates a kitchen dance with a nice energy, offering an open view into the magic of their kitchen. The kitchen garden and a commitment to seasonal menus connect patrons to the very roots of their dining experience. With a seasonal menu freshly cooked daily, menus, carefully curated to mirror the seasons, draw inspiration from that kitchen garden and the surrounding bounty of locally sourced foods.

Restaurant manager, Thomas Gammella , was named the Gold Service Scholarship’s 2022 Scholar and the staff are all encouraged to embrace hospitality as a vocation and undertake the Gold Service training. Adding to the culinary mosaic is The Boxford, the latest gem in groups culinary crown. A Sicilian chef kneads and crafts pizza and pasta with a meticulous 72-hour dough proofing process. The result? A culinary journey that transcends expectations, attracting over 4,000 covers served its the six weeks. The Boxford has a similar aesthetic – the vaulted birch lined ceiling, great lighting, and lovely plants. It’s the same warm welcome, serving relaxed all-day food and drinks, you can pop in for coffee or enjoy a meal.
