The Bugle: Where Hamble Comes Together
There are pubs that become destinations, and pubs that feel like the heart of their community. The Bugle manages to be both.
Set on the cobbled Hamble High Street, just moments from the river, this characterful traditional pub is as welcoming to visiting sailors and day-trippers as it is to those who live within strolling distance. In summer, when Hamble is buzzing with visitors making their way between the marinas, across the foreshore and crossing on the famous pink ferry, The Bugle provides an inviting place to pause, eat and take in the atmosphere.
Yet behind its appeal as a waterside destination lies something equally important: a genuine village local.
That balance is one of the things General Manager Marc values most. He has been at The Bugle for over a year but has worked with Ideal Collection since 2010, giving him a deep understanding of the independent hospitality group and the communities its venues serve.
Marc is very focused on The Bugle being a traditional pub for the local community, which means a warm welcome, familiar faces at the bar, outstanding food, local beer and a reason to return throughout the year.
A pub with a sense of place
Hamble is particularly well served when it comes to places to eat and drink, so every venue must work hard to earn its place in village life. The Bugle does this by serving consistently great food and creating a welcoming, cosy
The building itself provides an atmospheric starting point. Oak beams, exposed brickwork, wooden detailing and a roaring open fire give it the character expected of an old English pub, while carefully introduced modern touches keep the surroundings contemporary and relaxed. Bar stools help create a convivial atmosphere, inviting people to settle in for a drink and a conversation rather than simply passing through.
In warmer weather, the terrace overlooking the River Hamble is understandably popular. As autumn gives way to winter, attention turns indoors, where the fire, cosy corners and gentle hum of the bar make The Bugle every bit as appealing.
The pub’s location inevitably attracts visitors, particularly during the busy sailing season, but its programme of regular events keeps it firmly connected to local life. Live music currently takes place on Thursday evenings from 7pm until 9.30pm, alongside the pub’s Locals’ Night. During winter, live music will move to a monthly Locals’ Night, maintaining a regular occasion for the village to come together as the evenings draw in.
Fridays bring another great British pub tradition: the weekly meat raffle. Draws take place at 6pm, with prizes supplied by Chambers Butchers in Hamble. A special extended Christmas raffle is planned for Friday 18 December.
Local ingredients, confidently cooked
As part of Ideal Collection, The Bugle shares the group’s commitment to high-quality food, local provenance and relaxed hospitality. Ideal Collection’s venues across Hampshire and West Sussex each have their own personality, but all place an emphasis on carefully sourced ingredients and well-executed dishes. The group is also a corporate partner of Hampshire Fare, supporting and showcasing regional producers across its menus.
The menu at The Bugle is deliberately concise, allowing the kitchen to concentrate on doing each dish well. Seasonal main courses are complemented by small plates and bar snacks, making it equally suitable for a full meal, a relaxed lunch or something informal with drinks.
There are familiar favourites, too. Takeaway fish and chips provide a simple supper option, while Sunday roasts have developed a particularly loyal following. Fridays and Saturdays are naturally busy, but Sundays have become an occasion in their own right, with generous roasts served alongside the à la carte menu. A walk beside the river followed by lunch beside the fire is a particularly appealing way to spend a winter Sunday.
It is wise to book, especially at weekends.

A new flavour in the kitchen
The arrival of Head Chef Indi is bringing another dimension to The Bugle’s food. Having grown up between Thailand and England, Indi is drawing on both sides of his background, combining the authentic Thai flavours he remembers with carefully sourced British ingredients. It is a personal approach to cooking rather than simply a change of style, and one that sits naturally alongside Ideal Collection’s commitment to local produce.
Guests will have an opportunity to experience this in full at a dedicated Thai Tasting Night on Wednesday 7 October. The event has already proved extremely popular, with places booking quickly. Those unable to secure a table are advised to look out for the next Thai evening planned for November.
The tasting nights are a good example of what The Bugle does so well: respecting everything people enjoy about a traditional pub while giving them something new to discover.

Gather around The Captain’s Table
Tucked away upstairs is one of The Bugle’s best-kept secrets. The Captain’s Table is a private dining room overlooking Hamble’s cobbled streets and the river.
The room seats eight people comfortably, or up to ten for a cosier gathering, and works equally well for a family celebration, dinner with friends or an informal business meeting. There is no separate room charge when dining, making it an attractive option for anyone wanting privacy without losing the atmosphere and attentive service of the pub below.
For those who prefer to remain at the heart of the action, the main bar and dining spaces retain their relaxed, unpretentious appeal. Well-kept local ales, including beers from Hampshire’s The Flower Pots Brewery, sit alongside cocktails, wines and speciality spirits and of course, Hildon natural mineral water.
Christmas at the village local
As Christmas approaches, The Bugle will become even more of a gathering place.
Seasonal hampers featuring local produce will be available during December, offering a taste of Hampshire for Christmas tables and gifts. On 10 December, a Meet the Brewer evening will welcome The Flower Pots Brewery who supply Flowerpots and Goodens Gold, (The Bugle’s own ale is brewed by Ringwood Brewery).
A Christmas quiz follows on 14 December, and the special meat raffle takes place on Friday 18 December. Then, on 22 December, a festive Locals’ Night will offer the chance to warm up for Christmas with live music and complimentary mulled wine.
The pub will even open from noon until 2pm on Christmas Day, giving Hamble residents the opportunity to meet friends and neighbours for a drink before returning home for lunch. It is a small detail, but one that says a great deal about The Bugle’s role in village life.
Celebrations will continue on New Year’s Eve with a £65 set menu, live music and a complimentary glass of fizz at midnight to welcome the new year. This sold out last year, and will no doubt be a full house again.
Part of the Ideal Collection
The Bugle is one of five distinctive Ideal Collection venues, alongside Kimbridge Barn, The White Horse in Otterbourne, Boathouse Swanwick and Boathouse Chichester.
Regular guests can also take advantage of the Ideal Collection loyalty scheme and app, which allows customers to book, order and pay online while accessing exclusive rewards and promotions.
For Hildon, there is a natural affinity with hospitality businesses that value provenance, quality and a strong connection to their surroundings. Like Hildon Natural Mineral Water, which is drawn and bottled at source in the Hampshire countryside, The Bugle demonstrates how a distinctive local identity can sit comfortably alongside the highest standards of hospitality.
Whether arriving by boat on a summer afternoon, meeting friends for a drink, settling beside the fire for Sunday lunch or joining the village for a festive celebration, The Bugle offers something increasingly precious: a pub that feels special without ever losing its sense of belonging.
